Embedded fiber optic sensors for reinforced concrete structures
Recently, there have been efforts to embed sensor devices into civil structures, creating what are known as 'smart civil structures'. These embedded sensors can be used to monitor structures, while they are under construction and also to provide information regarding their long term health. Although there are many conventional sensors for this purpose, fiber optic sensors are also being evaluated for such applications due to their having a number of advantages over their conventional counterparts. This paper describes experimentation with concrete embedded multimode fiber optic sensors based on intensity modulation. These can be used for nondestructive measurement of internal strain, internal crack sensing as well as for the curing of the concrete material.
