A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
High performance simulation of internal combustion engines
At the moment, the design process of piston engines is mainly characterized by building, testing and modifying prototypes. Computer simulation is used as a complementary tool and in research, mainly because setting up, calculating and analyzing an internal combustion engine (ICE) simulation currently has turnaround times of several weeks. All steps of the simulation, pre-processing, calculation and post-processing had to be accelerated in order to create a usable tool for the industrial development process. Therefore, the EC Esprit project HPS-ICE (High-Performance Simulation of Internal Combustion Engines) was set up with the partners Computational Dynamic Ltd., Daimler Benz AG, SGI, HLRS and Volvo. The goal of the project is to reduce the time for a complete cycle to one week by using advanced methods for all steps of the simulation cycle. This paper describes the results of the project and takes a look at future developments.
