Base isolated structures with active control
Modern methods of earthquake protection for buildings and other structures have been developed in recent years. According to these methods, a soft medium is placed between the foundation of buildings and ground, and it has the role of decoupling the horizontal effects of an earthquake from the vertical load transfer. Such methods are known as base isolation (1) and become a practical reality in recent gears with the construction of several buildings (2). Rubber bearings (3), or sliding systems with hysteretic damping and friction (4) placed beneath the foundation block provide large flexibility of motion in the horizontal direction, thus reducing horizontal effects. In these systems, the vertical motion and forces are transmitted unchanged between the structure and ground. The bearing systems are suitable for low-rise rigid structures.
