Polyester powder coating systems for architectural aluminum in Europe

Since 1972 the share of powder coatings used for the protection of aluminum extrusions for architectural uses, in competition with conventional solvent-based paints and as an alternative to anodizing, has steadily increased. In 1986 more than 40 million square metres or more than 120 thousand tons of architectural aluminum have been powder coated. This paper gives a thorough description of the latest development of polyester powder coating systems used for aluminum in the building industry. The criteria of the choice of the weathering resistant powders, the importance of metal pretreatment, and of the coating process itself as well as of the quality control in this industry are assessed. Competing coating technologies are comapred on the basis of their characteristics.
