Image analysis of microcracks
Recent advances in instrumentation and analysis techniques have made it possible to carry out automated crack surveys of cement paste, mortar, and rock using an integrated scanning electron microscopy - energy dispersive spectrometer - image analysis system. Specimens are prepared both with and without epoxy integration. Both fractured and polished surfaces are studied. The scanning electron microscope is operated using both secondary and backscattered electron detectors. Backscattered electrons allow constituent phases to be identified based on atomic number contrast. Constituents are further identified using the energy dispersive spectrometer. The system is automated so that stage movement and data acquisition can be controlled by the image analysis system. The instrumentation provides a major improvement in both the quality and the quantity of crack data and serves as an important tool in the study of mechanisms that control the behavior of nonductile materials.
