Corrosion protection characteristics of calcite lined iron water-supply pipes

A novel technique for water mains renovation is based on a chemical process, enabling in-situ deposition of a calcite coating on the cleaned pipe surface. This paper describes results of polarization tests aiming to characterize the corrosion protection properties of such coatings. This study has shown that the corrosion-protection properties of calcite and cement mortar linings can be characterized by a polarization technique. The preliminary data obtained indicate that calcite linings provide corrosion protection properties substantially similar to those of cement-mortar linings. In both cases it would seem that blockage of the pores by corrosion products results in a protective mechanism similar to that provided by a dense protective film.
