A quality performance management system for construction projects
Direct rework costs on indutrial construction projects have been found to be greater than 12 % of the total project cost. Rework costs are only the 'tip of the iceberg' as there are many other impact costs associated with rework and the lack of quality. Quality problems in construction cost American businesses well over U.S. dollar 15 billion every year. The Construction Industry Institute formed the Quality Management Task Force in early 1985 to address this problem. The Task Force has developed a system to track the cost of quality on engineering/construction projects. The management tool was developed using information from actual industrial projects and it an be implemented using systems currently used within the industry. This management system allows quality costs to be measured for each discipline at each phase of a project. This information can then be used to pinpoint areas where quality needs to be improved. The system can be used now and it is currently being used to manage quality on several construction projects.
