Optimum design of composite bridge deck panels
This paper describes the results of a research project whose primary objective was the development of an optimum design capability for the design of bridge deck panels made of fiber reinforced composite materials. The end product was a software package that coupled commercially available, advanced optimization algorithms with a general purpose finite element analysis capability. The optimization software consisted of a package called MICRO-DOT developd by Engineering Design Optimization Incorporated. The finite element portion of the program provided for several element types including orthotropic quadrilaterals. The particular shapes selected for use in the deck panels were such that all configurations could be generated from beam and plate elements. Loadings on the panels were chosen to simulate vehicle loads on a bridge. A number of example deck panel designs are included.
