Pressure load capacity of heat exchanger tubesheet
The pressure load carrying capacity of a heat exchanger tubesheet is examined with respect to the requirements of Section III of the ASME Pressure Vessel Code for Class 1 Components. The code gives rules for three methods that can be used to determine the maximum allowable pressure: linear elastic analysis, limit analysis and plastic analysis. Due to the difficulty in classifying stresses obtained from linear elastic analysis, and the resulting tendency for designers to err on the conservative side, the allowable pressure is usually underestimated when it is obtained from linear elastic analysis. This paper presents the plastic analysis of the heat exchanger tubesheet. It describes the complexities of tubesheet modelling along with several verification tests of the applied methods.
