Stress corrosion cracking susceptibility of high strength stainless steel in water gate services
A temper heat treatment at 450 to 500 Cel provides susceptibility to SCC of coned disc springs made of 13Cr martensitic stainless steel in the water gate operating mechanism. Electrochemical tests in 3 % NaCl solution and long-term immersion tests for coned disc spring specimen in sea water or tapped water were conducted. The cracks observed in this study were concluded to be of a typical active path SCC. The relations between the hardness, precipitation of carbides and formation of Cr depleted zones, and SCC susceptibility were evaluated.
