A study of centrifuge modeling of swelling clay
A study was made of the applicability of centrifuge modelling to problems of flow and swell in active clays. Compacted columns of swelling soil were tested during advance of a wetting front through them, under 1-g and increased g conditions. The tests indicated that in all cases, the coefficient of permeability of the wetted soil decreases with time following wetting, despite the fact that swelling takes place accompanied by increasing void ratio. This time effect, which is apparently not dependent on g-level, makes it difficult to establish similitude conditions for studying the time rate of development of swell. The causes for the permeability decrease are considered, leading to insight into the swelling mechanism itself. Although the modelling of time rate of swell is problematic, it appears that the final swell at equilibrium may reasonably be modelled in the centrifuge.
