Centrifuge modeling of piles
A pile driving hammer that modeled the operating speed and characteristics of prototype air/steam hammers was designed and built. It was tested in the centrifuge at an acceleration of 25 g, operating at impact velocities up to 3.5 meters per second. A model pipe pile having a prototype length of 15 meters, was instrumented internally with resistance strain gages. The pile was driven with a closed end into dry sand and then statically loaded to failure. Measurements of force and acceleration at the pile top were made during driving. Pile strain measurements were made during the static load test. The total system provides a very realistic means of modeling the pile installation process.
