Boundary effects in dynamic centrifuge model tests

A number of centrifuges are now being used to study the response of geotechnical models during dynamic loading. An issue of great importance is the effect of the boundary conditions on the results of such experiments. Researchers have proposed the use of a material called 'Duxseal' by Manville, which appears to have some benefit in reducing wave relections from the boundary. Some centrifuge experiments and basic laboratory tests have been done to determine the properties and effectiveness of duct seal materials. It is found that the duct seal material reduces but does not eliminate wave reflections. It also appears to have some benefit in preventing high frequency vibrations of the walls of a box from entering the side of the model.
