Boundary effects in modeling of foundations subjected to vertical excitation
Of importance in the modeling of dynamic problems in the geotechnical centrifuge is the effect of boundary geometry and the ability of this boundary to simulate a half space environment if desired. Boundaries that exist in the close confines of a centrifuge model will invariably reflect wave energy that impinges on it, resulting in a complex response of foundation models that woul not be observed in a true half space environment. An improved understanding of this phenomenon is desired so that modelers may recognize and deal with such reflected wave energy in their analyses. Centrifuge model experiments of rigid circular footings at the surface of a soil mass have been conducted to evaluate various boundary conditions including square and circular containers with and without an absorbing boundary material. Conclusions are drawn regarding the efficacy of these measures in centrifuge modeling.
