Filer city cogneration plant water treatment design
The Filer City Cogneration Plant is a coal and wood waste fired facility exporting 100,000 lb/hr of steam to a paper mill host and delivering 54 MW of electricity to the local utility. It has two stoker fired boilers rated at 1500 psig and is located on Lake Manistee in Filer City, Michigan. The plant started up in the Spring of 1990. The plant is normally staffed with four persons on shift -a shift supervisor, an operator at the control console, and two auxiliary operators. In addition, on day shift Monday thru Friday, there is also a plant manager, secratary, I&C foreman, two I&C technicians, a maintenance foreman and two maintenance technicians. In all, the plant is staffed with about 45 people. This paper discusses the conceptual design of the water treatment systems at the plant. It provides design details as to how the conceptual design was implemented for the plant intake, makeup demineralizer, cooling tower water chemical treatment equipment, power cycle water analysis equipment, and boiler water chemical treatment equipment. The selection of processes and equipment components depended on such key issues as environmental sensitivity, system/component reliability, client preference, capital and O&M costs, plant staffing, worker health issues and owner's engineer review.
