Machining accuracy analysis for computer-aided fixture designs
This paper presents a machining accuracy analysis for fixture design verifications. Machining errors are described in terms of deterministic and random components and analyzed based on their sources when CNC machine tools and machining centers are utilized, where high machining accuracy and multi-operation under single setup become major characteristics of manufacturing systems. Dependence of resultant dimension variations on the variations of relevant dimensions is examined and the relationships of locating datum and machining surfaces are analyzed. Four basic models of dimension variation relationships are proposed to estimate the machining error, where different formulas of resultant dimension variations are given for different combinations of relevant dimension variations. A datum-machining surface relationship graph (DMG) is developed to construct a tolerance chain analysis for calculations of the dimension variations. Locating method effects on fixture locating errors are discussed. Implementation procedure is given for a verification of the computer-aided fixture design.
