Kinematic measurements of wave overtopping using Laser Doppler Velocimeter
Kinematics of transient wave overtopping on coastal breakwaters has been studied experimentally. Laboratory experiments are conducted to measure the overtopping wave profile and water particle velocity both in the seaward and shoreward region of the breakwater. Solitary waves with moderate wave amplitude are used as the incident waves. The wave profiles are obtained by resistance type wave gauge. The two dimensional water particle velocities are measured by a portable, four-beam, fiber optic Laser Doppler Velocimeter (LDV) system. The experimental data has been compared with the results from numerical model (Lee, Chang and Zhuang 1992). In certain cases the agreement between the numerical model and the experimental data is surprisingly well. The experimental data serves as the critical check for the numerical model. Some interesting experimental observations in the separation zone of shoreward breakwater are presented.
