Damage detection in truss structures using a direct updating technique
A previously developed FE updating technique based on the minimization of input residuals is extended to structure diagnostics. Specifically, the problem of damage detection and identification in truss structures is addressed. Here damage may occur as cracking of members or loosening of riveted or bolted parts: this mainly affects the stiffness matrix of the FE model. If a good FE model of the undamaged structure exists, FRFs measured on the actual structure may be used to update the undamaged model. The problem is even simpler than usual updating, since only the stiffness matrix is significantly altered by the damage, thus restricting the number of unknowns to the stiffness correction factors which parametrically represent the damage. The problem may still become ill-conditioned due to dynamic reduction and the measurement errors. Hence the same regularization techniques developed for the general case can be used. The goal is to establish, for a given truss structure, a procedure able to detect the type and location of damage: this should include guidelines to choose an appropriate set of measurement points and working frequencies.
