Kinematic modeling of flexible fixturing system and its application to machining processes
The absence of adequate flexible fixturing methodologies is a significant impediment to the evolution of truly flexible manufacturing systems. For the field of flexible fixturing to become a science, it is necessary to develop general mathematical description for the analysis and synthesis of flexible fixturing systems. Drawing on screw theory and a mathematical theory of flexible fixturing for machining process is developed. There are two parts in the theory: analysis and synthesis. Modeling and representation of flexible workpiece fixturing system for machining processes are presented. The following functions of fixtures are analyzed: deterministic workpiece location, total constraint, clamping stability, accessibility and detachability. Analysis and calculation of locating error based on applications of screw theory is presented.
