Durability of carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRPs) as external reinforcement of concrete beams
The current research effort was initiated to evaluate the effect of environmental conditioning on the performance of concrete members strengthened by externally-bonded advanced composite materials. Test specimens were fabricated and cured following standard procedures, and CFRP external reinforcement strips were attached to the specimens using a high-performance epoxy adhesive. Control samples were tested prior to exposure to different environmental conditions. The externally reinforced concrete samples were tested to determine the effects of freeze-thaw cycling, hot water immersion, and exposure to ultraviolet light/condensation following ASTM test standards.
