Some potential side-effects of electrochemical chloride removal from reinforced concrete
Cathodic current densities of the order of magnitude likely to be used for electrochemical chloride removal from reinforced concrete have been applied for periods of 1-3 months to steel electrodes embedded in well-characterised hydrated cement pastes. Consequent changes in the pore solution phase composition of the zone of material extending a few mm from the cathode have been shown to involve substantial increase in local concentrations of alkali metal hydroxides and dissolution of SO4(exp2-) and Cl(exp-) ions from solid cement hydration products. The effects of these changes on the hardness of the cement matrix in the vicinity of the steel have been studied and their influence on the stability of siliceous aggregates of known susceptibility to expansive alkali silica reaction (ASR) has also been assessed.
