Present advantages from diesel engines over any other modes of prime movers are: Independence, economy, reliability. Drawbacks are: Want of elasticity at varying loads. The diesel engine is basically little adapted to take over a heavy abrupt load. The remedies to this defect are: Use of progressive clutches, hydraulic, or others; choice of appropriate loads: adequate inertia. The application of the diesel principle to vibratory engines is investigated: Pile driving, stamping, hammers. Cases where it meets competition from other prime movers are discussed, for instance: petrol engines, electric motors, compressed air motors, steam engines. Possible uses, in times to come are reviewed.
