The dynamics of a vibrating cylinder gyro with imperfection

This paper presents an analysis of the mechanics of a vibrating cylinder rate gyroscope including the effects of structural imperfection which is inevitable present in a real device. Imperfection has important consequences for the vibration properties of the cylinder which affect gyro performance. Interaction between imperfection and externally imposed motion of the cylinder gives rise to a number of potential error mechanisms which are identified and analyzed. Analytical expressions are developed by means of which the error mechanisms are quantified in a practically useful way.
