Assessing mechanical properties of polymers for pipe applications
The threshold load to just maintain crack propagation and conditions for catastrophic failure, should the material be loaded above this threshold, are two key evaluation requirements in the assessment of polymers for pipe applications. Frequently these assessments must be carried out during material research and development, before trial manufacture of pipes, when material samples are in the form of compression moulded sheets of a small size. Charpy type experiments do not provide the above assessment data under simulated steady pipe pressure load conditions, hence a new method for obtaining such data has been developed. This method can obtain the required data when the material has been loaded and allowed to stress relax, i.e. representing the conditions of a pressurised pipe, before a crack is initiated.
