Field evaluation of electrochemical techniques for assessing corrosion of prestressed concrete reservoirs
A variety of failure of potable water reservoirs were found to be caused by corrosion of the prestressing wires. Many owners wait until significant damage has progressed throughout a structure before implementing a rehabilitation. This project investigated the applicability and reliability of electrochemical testing technique to locate and determine corrosion rates of prestressed wires embedded in gunite on concrete water reservoirs. The investigation determined that half-cell potential results correlated fairly well with actively corroding areas. Polarization resistance measurements using guard ring electrodes did not adequately determine corrosion rates of the wire wrapping on the reservoir. It is believed, that the guard ring counter electrode was too large and tended to average localized corrosion areas.
