Road construction at Novar windfarm
New methods are described for the combined construction and reinstatement of roads on thick blanket peat, suitable for much of the terrain usuable by windfarms in upland Scotland. These methods have important engineering, ecological and economic advantages: free-draining roads which facilitate construction during severe weather; minimised visual impact; rapid reinstatement with vegetation similar to that on adjacent undisturbed ground; and reduced costs in removing unwanted peat overburden. Reinstatement is achieved using heather and peat turf, minimising the use of reseeded ground. Local problems and monitoring techniques are explained, together with the applicability of this technique to other blanket peat environments.
