The structural control concept of newly proposed reinforced concrete slit shear wall systems is presented, and the recent theoretical and experimental studies on the nonlinear behaviour of the structure are summarized. Based on the results of these studies, the main factors affecting the behavior and performance of the slit shear wall are evaluated. It is concluded that the shear connections along the slits, which are the key control devices, are crucial to the overall aseismic performance of the slit shear wall system. In designing the slit configuration and the shear connections along the slits, the yield strength, ductility and post-yielding characteristics of the connections need be considered. Optimum performance of the slit shear wall system can be expected when shear connections are designed to dissipate a maximum amount of vibration energy.
