Design guidance for joining pultruded composite profiles
Presented is a personal overview on design guidance for primary structural joints with pultruded composite profiles. This is necessary, and timely, because construction professionals remain uncertain about using profiles in major load-bearing structures, not least because if a joint should fail it could lead to overall structural failure. However, during the 1990's we have witnessed a growing acceptance of polymeric composite materials in construction applications. As a result there is an urgent need to develop reliable and safe design guidance which will reduce the cost of design, ensure durability, and make a pultruded composite solution more cost-competitive and attractive. Observations on the current status of joint design are made and recommendations are given on what actions are needed to develop the refined guidance that will help to establish practice and their codes.
