Engineering aspects of polymer degradation and stabilisation
Some physical and engineering aspects of polymer degradation are discussed and related to the chemical degradation that occurs in conditions that favour oxidation. The depth profile of degradation is an important controlling factor and may be changed markedly if a stabiliser is added. The thickness of a part is often ignored when determining the chemical degradation characteristics, yet may have a significant influence over fracture. The ways in which molecular degradation leads to the deterioration of engineering properties are discussed with particular attention to the fracture mechanism, diffusion of oxygen, ultraviolet intensity and the ultraviolet transmittivity of the polymer, the influence of stress, and the physical changes that follow from the chemical degradation, such as secondary crystallisation.
