Empirical study of water hammer in plastics pipes
Problems of unsteady flow in plastics pipes have been examined experimentally. Pressure wave velocities, cavitation, and influence of deaeration on the pressure increase during the pipe filling with water were analysed. The experiments used commonly applied pipes unplasticised poly(vinyl chloride), medium density polyethylene, and high density polyethylene. The measured pressure wave velocities in polyethylene pipes are much higher than would be expected from Zukovski's formula. The tests have shown that cavitation due to water hammer has a wave nature. The average frequency of cavitation oscillations in plastics pipes was about 600 Hz (for steel pipes it is about 900 Hz). The changes of the water flow, resulting from air pockets outflow, cause a phenomenon similar to water hammer.
