Technology to confine hexavalent chromium in cement
Nihon Solid Co., Ltd., has developed a high pH value chromium reducing agent Clover that has led to a patented technology to artificially confine toxic heavy metal hexavalent chromium in cement. This technology is compatible with the ISO 14000 series. Hexavalent chromium compounds are dissolved readily and display a strong oxidation effect and toxicity. The newly developed technology is essentially a technique of mixing cement without effusing chromium ions in the concrete water, or breathing water, by adding a small volume of ferrous ions or by adding chromium ions when engaging in the work of mixing cement of high pH value with the addition of a small volume of water to promote hydration reaction. These ferrous and chromium ions are added to the dry cement at time of kneading, so this technique simultaneously prevents the generation of chromium and provides the concrete solidification treatment. No heavy metal sludge or industrial waste is generated; the need for a water treatment is eliminated. Other advantages are, e.g., that the strengths of reinforced and non-reinforced concrete are increased slightly, byproducts such as fly ash and mineral slags can be utilized effectively.
