Fiber optic sensors for structural monitoring
Distributed sensing of strain in structures is facilitated by embedding a fiber in a range of structural materials including plastics, concretes, and composites. The Bragg grating sensor is amenable to this form of operation. In this sensor, a grating is produced in the core of the fiber via photo-inscription prices. The operation is based on wavelength encoding wherein the grating behaves as a wavelength-selective reflector, reflecting only a very narrow range of optical wavelengths. When the fiber is strained, the wavelength at which its reflection occurs is found to shift and thus provide a means to sense such strains.
