Recycling of some Egyptian industrial solid wastes in clay bricks
In the present work an attempt is made to study the possibility of using clay combined with industrial waste products such as blast furnace slag and converter slag cooled by air-water for brick manufacture. The materials used are investigated by chemical analysis, DTA, X-ray as well as grain size distribution. Solid bricks are made using hand moulding. Firing is carried out at 800, 900 and 1000 degree C at a rate of 2.5 degree C/min up to the desired temperature for 2 hours duration. The ceramic properties are measured. The results show that the substitution of 10% clay by blast furnace slag fired at 900 degree C, and 1000 degree C, improves the compressive strength, and the bulk density, but the substitution by converter slag decreases the above properties. It can be concluded that the granulated slag is suitable for brick making whereas the converter slag is unsuitable.
