Considerations of thread-loosening by transverse impacts
Firstly, the mechanism of turn-off loosening of bolted joints subjected to transverse impacts is discussed, and in addition the results of loosening tests, in which very small slippage is given repeatedly at bearing surfaces of test nuts, are presented. Roughly speaking, the experiments support a fundamental idea that the most significant factor for the turn-off loosening is an elastic torsion of a bolt shank generated during slippage of mating threads. The experiments also show that accumulation of such small slippage as the order of 1 my m or less at the bearing surfaces with repetition of the impact, too, can produce gradual loss of axial tension due to the turn-off.
