On the stability of refractory lining in lime kilns
The stability of the refractory lining in a large diameter lime kiln has been investigated in order to determine the root cause of the condition in which layers of refractory loosen and eventually separate from the walls of the kiln. A finite element approach has been used to determine the response of a single ring of refractory brick, insulation, and structural shell. The shell response has been determined for two different temperature profiles across the wall of the kiln at the location where failure occurred. The effects of mortar at the brick interfaces and between the brick and insulation were investigated. Finally, the effects on the lining stability associated with the choice of brick size was studied.
