Delayed ettringite formation and heat curing - implications of the work of Kelham
The various mechanisms involved in delayed ettringite formation (DEF) and heat curing of cements were studied. The study used Kelham's work on five different production clinkers that were modified by adding SO3 and grinding mortars to different levels. Type III cements manufactured in 1994 have an increased risk of DEF compared with other cement types. No correlation was found between compressive strength and the expansion calculated using the equation of Kelham. The Kelham equation may be suitable for determining the susceptibility of cements to DEF.
