Feasibility analysis for a radioactive waste repository tunnel
The feasibility of constructing deep tunnels in the Opalinuston rock formation in Switzerland was examined. Tunneling feasibility was studied through an initial elastic analysis followed by an elastoplastic analysis. The elastic analysis was aimed at investigating the effect of a wide variety of parameters, including the ground as well as the liner material and a range of liner thicknesses. The effect of drained versus undrained conditions behind the liner was investigated, as well as the effect of ground stiffness and permeability on the results.
