Temporary remedial treatment of contaminated groundwater
The contamination of groundwater often exceeds the allowable limits for its use in different purposes. In such cases, treatment becomes essential. Sometimes, measures to reduce the concentration of contaminant content temporarily may be sufficient. In this work, two alternative procedures are studied. These are increasing the depth of wells and use of vertical barriers between the well and the contamination source. The study included field measurements and mathematical modeling. From field works, the hydraulic properties of the aquifer are determined. Also the chemical and biological groundwater quality is defined at different locations of the study area. Two mathematical models are applied to study the fluid flow and contaminant transport in vertical sections. The conducted field work and mathematical modeling led to several conclusions. Among these are graphical relations between the increase of well depth and improvement of water quality as well as relations, which correlate the barrier length and position with contaminant content.
