Some technical lessons learnt from construction of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project Transfer Tunnel
The Lesotho Highlands Transfer Tunnel was constructed to take water from the Katse Reservoir and deliver it to the Muela Hydropower station, some 20 km east of Butha Buthe. The site investigations, planning design and construction of the 45-km-long, 4, 35-m-diameter LHWP Phase 1A Transfer Tunnel are described. The LHPC began construction work in February 1991 and substantial completion was achieved in September 1997. The tunnel was excavated using three full-face tunnel boring machines (TBM) and was lined with a nominal 300-mm-thick in-situ concrete lining by five crews using telescopic shutters. Some of the practical lessons learned from the construction of the tunnel are discussed.
