Waterproofing tunnels with geosynthetics in Europe
Geosynthetics can be successfully employed in underground construction. PVC geomembranes have been used as barriers against water and gas infiltration from the surrounding ground, in highway, subway, railway and hydropower tunnels. This paper addresses design, installation and quality control of two case histories: Vaglia/Firenzuola a high-speed railroad project in Italy currently under construction and Spalov, a hydropower tunnel in the Czech Republic completed in 1998.
