US hotels use glass reinforced plastic
Short notice given only substantially as follows: Pultruded glass fibre composites are being used in hotel construction in the USA. Already 17 hotels in seven mid-western towns have been provided with stairwells made from the glass fibre composites, which were created by Morrison Molded Fiber Glass of Bristol, Virginia. In the various Fairfield Inns, part of the Marriot International Group, handrails, structural members, stairs and landings made from the composite offer durable and cheap alternatives to conventional materials, Morrison Molded Fiber Glass says. Further, the composites are not subject of corrosion so frequently encountered in severe winters. They are even resistant to the salt that is widely used for melting snow on roads. Nevertheless, the stairwells are visible from outside the hotels and so need to retain their attractive appearance, while requiring a minimum of maintenance. In addition to the pultruded components, a number of other building elements, such as Duragrid glass fibre gratings, Safplate glass fibre gritted plate and customised glass fibre pultrusions have served to replace more traditional materials including aluminium, steel and concrete.
