Long-term performance on nonwoven geotextile filters in five coastal and bank protection projects
This paper evaluates the long-term performance of needle-punched nonwoven geotextiles used as filters in coastal and river bank applications. Filtration and mechanical properties of nonwoven geotextiles exhumed from five separate projects in Europe and the Far East sites are reviewed. Hydraulic conditions varied from wave action to stream flow, and the filtered soils ranged from sands to marine clays. Performance was based on the condition of the site and the hydraulic and mechanical condition of the exhumed geotextiles as well as a comparison of the geotextiles used with respect to current filter design criteria.
