The design of geosynthetic reinforced foundations
In an effort to improve the performance of poor soils geotechnical engineers are faced with four potential solutions. These include: replace the poor ground with a stronger material or combination of materials, alter the natural condition of the poor soil to meet project requirements, redesign the structure to meet the soil limitations, or bypass the unsuitable soil laterally through relocation of the facility, or vertically through the use of a deep foundation. The purpose of this paper is to examine the first option. In particular, this paper reviews the work that has been conducted to date on this topic as it relates to the inclusion of geosynthetics as reinforcement within the replaced zone. This information is then used to examine the influence that punched and drawn biaxial geogrids have on the design of a geosynthetic reinforced foundation (GRF) with an emphasis on bearing capacity and settlement of spread footings. The paper provides typical design parameters for these geogrids used in reinforced foundations.
