The internal stability problem of reinforced earth structures, where a material possessing high compressive strength interacts with a material possessing high tensile strength, is unique. The introduction of geotextiles in soils to be reinforced is a cost-effective solution. However, the mechanics and mechanisms of geotextile reinforced soils is still unknown and the design methods are simplified in most cases. There are numerous limit equilibrium methods developed to deal primarily with the stability of geotextile reinforced slopes, but in each method the failure mechanism is assumed and attempts to satisfy some of the limit equilibrium requirements are made. The methods can be modified with respect to a consideration of the internal stability of reinforced walls. Analysis and forecasting of the behaviour of unstable masses by numerical modelization or interpretation of measured data is one of the major aspects of the paper.
