A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
An attempt on evaluation of corroded steel bridge members
A research project was initiated with the objective of providing an overview of the importance of adequate corrosion inspection and developing practical guidlines for assessment of the effect of corrosion on structural details in steel highway bridges. This report presents an outline of the research project, and a review of some findings of the study is presented. First objective is an effort to know about corrosion characteristics in steel bridge members. The survey of corroded damaged bridges, number of which is about 140, was conducted and the investigation was made into the types of corrosion found, locations of corrosion on bridge elements, and environmental effects on the structure. From this investigation, the authors are trying to make corrosion maps of each type of steel bridges. Second objective is to develop non destructive evaluation techniques for corroded bridge members, including technique of corrosion inspection. Final objective is to establish an evaluation method of the structural capacity of corrosion damaged bridge members. In this context, ultrasonic testing and infrared testing are shortly discussed.
