Rehabilitation of corrosion induced damage of reinforced concrete structures by electrochemical protection methods
In steel reinforced or prestressed concrete structures a passive layer on the steel surface generally provides adequate corrosion resistance. Depassivation can take place as a result of carbonisation or chloride contamination of the concrete. Measures are therefore nessecary to prevent corrosion induced damage of the reinforcement or keeping it within tolerable limits during the designed lifetime of the structure. To avoid the disadvantages of traditional rehabilitation techniques, various electrochemical methods have been developed in recent years and succesfully applied in practice. The effects, problems, and new research results of the following methods are described and discussed: electrochemical realkalisation, electrochemical removal of chlorides, cathodic protection by impressed current.
