Ferro-nickel slag product 'NAS Sand'
Nippon Yakin Kogyo's Oheyama works produces ferro-nickel nodules ('luppe') by reducing nickel oxide ores imported from New Caledonia, Indonesia and the Philippines, without liquefaction, in a rotary kiln. The ferro-nickel luppe is recovered from the slag part by utilizing differences in both specific gravity and magnetic properties, after crushing the material discharged from the kiln. The remaining crushed slag is then prepared with a classifier to produce slag sand called 'NAS Sand'. This NAS Sand, being produced by roasting silicate ores consisting mainly of MgO and SiO2, is chemically stable and free of harmful substances and has many other excellent properties such as high density, hardness and toughness, good compaction with high water permeability, and high fire resistance with low thermal expansion, etc. It is widely used for many purposes such as asphalt aggregate, construction materials, molding sand and as a raw material for fertilizers.
