Development of high performance steels for structures
The properties of high performance steels (HPS) required by both the design side and construction side are introduced. The design side requires small variation of yield strength, low yield ratio and ductility in the thickness direction identical to that in the rolling direction. The construction side requires low weld crack susceptibility, enough strength and toughness of welded joint and enough workability. To meet these requirements, the manufacturing process for HPS of which the main characteristics are reduction of impurities and segregation in iron making and steelmaking process and control of microstructure in hot rolling and cooling processes are developed. By these manufacturing processes, new HPS including 590 N/mm2 tensile strength steel plates with low yield ratio for building construction and 780 N/mm2 tensile strength steel plates with high weldability for bridges have been newly developed in Japan. The new Japanese Industrial Standard published in 1994 for the rolled steels for building construction is also introduced.
