Application of spread-spectrum ultrasonic evalution to concrete structures
The results show that the Spread-Spectrum Ultrasonic Evaluation (SSUE) technique can be successfully applied to the NDE of concrete structures. The ability of SSUE to detect minute changes in the acoustic properties of components make it a promising application for integrity monitoring of concrete structures such as columns, piers and decks in bridges. It can be sued to detect the defects like corrosion, disbond and fracture in concrete with the aid of an expert system. Moreover, the SSUE system can be easily adapted to a wireless remote access configuration for an automatic condition assessment of large concrete structures. SSUE provides a possible solution to the deteriorating concrete infrastructure of the nation and offers a unique global inspection system that is quick and efficient compared to the standard concrete inspection techniques.
