Improved assessment of concrete dams using sonic tomography
Sonic tomography can characterize the physical properties of the unjointed concrete, and map lift-line delaminations. The sonic test results can be correlated with destructive tests to determine bulk strength and modulus. Such tests can be used to locate changes in the physical properties of the unjointed concrete within the dam. Using sonic tomography, lift-lines can be characterized and an estimate of the strength across the lift-lines can be obtained. This testing procedure will provide more comprehensive data for use in the finite element model at a significantly reduced cost than is currently possible. In addition, once this procedure has been refined it could be used for the assessment of other large concrete structures such as bridges.
